The Civil Service Jobs website is designed to extract data from the current Civil Service RSS feed and then extract further information from the website, presenting all of the data in one managable format.
There are two automated tasks which are constantly running: One job that checks the RSS feed every hour and another to extract updated information for each vacancy from the Civil Service website. All information is stored in a database table for ease of use.
Another part of the automated tasks will extract the location information from the job posting and contact Google to convert it to coordinates in order to plot it on a Google Map. This allows people to find jobs in their local area at a glance.
To aid promotion and promote the jobs further, the site also sends details of new vacancies to Twitter, here.
